I havent read this since 1999. This is my 5th time reading it.
It is such a biblical book that it can be hard to chew through sometime, but its always rewarding. As i read this, i am reminded by why i am such a lover of Dwarves. the way Tolkien wrote about them from the very beginning with Aule of the Vala down to the Seven Fathers and why they are short, sturdy and everything else.
The rest of the book is amazing. The taking of simple themes from Christian and Greek and Nordic religions. The mixing of the love of nature and music, childhood fears and just the excrutiating detail... 29 years after original publication and this book still delivers.
yes, i am a huge Tolkien fan.

OK, first things first, The Silmarilion reads like a gosh golly darn it history book. The writing is dry and flat, Tolkien's amateur status shows here more than in any other book. BUT...
His stories are wonderful, from top to bottom. His imagination was so deep and FULL, that is boggles the moind that Middle Earth DIDNT exist. Surely it must have, because this guy was able to provide so much detail on it.
It is a great gist missing from so many of today's most popular writers (Salvatore, I am looking at YOU).
It's unfortunate that Tolien was a poor writer in terms of writing skill, imagine his works if written by a great WRITER, like Martin, Friedman, or Brust?
Obviously my personal favorite of the tales in The Silmarillion is that of Turin Turambar, what are some of yours? Note also that GLORFINDEL, the elf lord from LOTR kills multiple BALROGS in TS... wtf was HE doing during the War of the Ring anyways?
