What are the duties of a Mage in a group? What are the things to watch out for?
Exactly how integral is my position in a group? I mean are mages a dime a dozen or what?
By the way, I'm specialized in Fire, with recent updates and such, should I respec anytime soon?

My mage is 51 so anyone higher please add your comments, but I have multiple 60s and have seen many good and bad mages play. Of course mages are loved for their water. Now that that is out of the way, mages mainly fill a ranged dps slot. Of course there are many specializations, they seem to be the best aoe class (especially for a Baron run), and they have good crowd control with sheep if you are fighting humanoids/beasts. Things to watch out for, are aggro. Don't open up with a pyroblast if you don't want to get hit. Wait for a few sunders. Unless specifically aoeing non-elite mobs, I see a lot of mages go straight for aoeing when there are multiple elites, and I don't think that's worth it in many cases, as it's hard to take aggro from you. I would just single attack whatever the tank is attacking, and if you need you can usually frost nova and pull back to give yourself some breathing space. Mages are very useful in a group, and I would say it would be nice to always have one in a 5 man group (and not just for the water, though it's a perk ). There seems to be a decent amount of mages running around, but when you want one you usually can't find one, as what usually happens with most classes. If you like Fire, stick with it. If anything the new patch will make you stronger as you will get instant arcane explosion and evocation for no talent points, and if you already put a few points in arcane for them, those points you can do other stuff with. (let me add that if you want to run in MC, fire is pretty much worthless on fire mobs so you would be well to respec frost, or so I've always heard) Hope this helps.

Having a 60 frost mage, I can't help but completely agree with Cal. Aggro control and mana-management are the two hardest parts of being a mage. The rest is pretty sweet.
In solo/PvE, the goal is the take down the mobs with the least amount of mana usage to minimize down time; In raids or 5-man groups, the goal is to contribute support DPS without out-aggroing the main tank. Sure, water and intellect buffs for the party are nice, but the consistently high DPS and crowd control are the main draws to having mages in a conventional group.
