taking this from the WoW forums so as not to lose it
Hey gusy (to quote a famous drood I once heard of), I just managed to break 23,500 armor in bearform self buffed, and I'm planning on getting to 25k in the next few days. In my search for this ridiculous amount of armor, I found the best goodies possible as a solo-quester or small group. This is all EASILY attainable gear that will allow you to break 20k armor without much of an issue, and I just wanted to share it with the rest of our druid brethren.
(Note: I left out a few equipment slots because there isn't really anything too outstanding outside of raiding that I was able to find. You're best bet for these slots is to find something "of the bear" or "Of the bandit".)
Chest: www.thottbot.com/?i=55780
Recommended level range: 60-61
Difficulty level: Easy.
This little goodie is easy to attain straight out the bat into HFP, with a quest line starting in Spinebreaker post, on the little wanted sign. First you must do this quest: www.thottbot.com/?qu=10809 . Then you are able to get a two part chain quest that starts here: www.thottbot.com/?qu=10813 . These are VERY easy and soloable, and you get a great high-armor tanking chest piece. I recommend +150 HP as an easy enchant to start off with, perhaps 6 all stats later on in the game.
Bracer: www.thottbot.com/?i=59172
Recommended level range: 68-70
Difficulty level: Easy aside from the 3-5 man at the end.
This is, AFAIK, the HIGHEST armor leather wrist piece there is currently, and you'll want to be at least 68 to start trying to get it, flight form being a must. You must also be 70 (again AFAIK) in order to *finish* the quest line. This doesn't mean you can't start at 68. The questline is really rather long, and culmonates into a 5 manable dragonboss guy at the end. You must do a LOT of prerequisite quests to get this item. Start here: www.wowhead.com/?quest=10680 . After doing all of the elemental quests, you're finally sent off to talk to Oronok Torn-Heart. For him you must do a few quests involving domesticated boars, which is a rather annoying quest, BUT there is one tidbit I wanted to mention about this quest that I found very useful: When you're trying to destroy the "Ravenous Flayer Eggs" for "A lesson Learned", you can do it IN FLIGHT FORM, while hovering above the eggs. You don't ever have to fight the mobs to finish the quest. Hopefully me posting this won't get the quest nerfed >.< Anyway, after you finish the quests for Oronok Torn-heart, he wants you to go find his three sons. The one that is of most interest to you is www.wowhead.com/?quest=10546 . However, you should do the other two brothers as well, because the quests are easily soloable, and after you FINISH getting your bracers, there is another followup that leads to a pair of GREAT quest rewards, and you must have all three brother quests completed. (For those interested in the rewards, heres a link: www.thottbot.com/?qu=10588 . Although it says its alliance only, its not, and you have to read the comments for the rewards, my apologies that these websites aren't completely updated for TBC). Anyway, after you do the quests for Borak, he asks you to do www.wowhead.com/?quest=10578 , which then gives you... TADA, your well earned reward. Note: Ruul the darkener is a TOUGH 3 man, I recommend just getting 5 people and making it easy. (Sry for wall of text on this one, but it was a lot of info)
Hands: www.thottbot.com/?i=59919
Recommended level range: 70
Difficulty level: Hardest out of all the items on this list. The Arcatraz run can be very hard, but you only need to complete the first three bosses. After this you must put together a group of 5 people for an elite quest.
In order to get these gloves, you'll have to be 70, because you have to go to Arcatraz to get near the end of the questline. You start out with www.wowhead.com/?quest=10683 , which is a very easy solo quest. After completing this, continue along with the followups he gives you, all of which are very easy to do with our great combination of flight form, stealth, and bearform for killing miniboss guys. After you've proven your allegiance to the Ashtongue deathsworn, you can finally talk to Akama, who gives you the quest to go to Arcatraz . After you go to arcatraz and talk to the dead body, you go back to Akama and are given a quest involving a 5 man elite quest. This quest is tough, but its not too hard to get 5 people together to do it, since you can group them up for multiple elite quests in the zone. Ultimately you are lead to www.wowhead.com/?quest=10708 . Which is where you take your GLORIOUS gloves and end the quest line.
Waist: www.thottbot.com/?i=59137
Recommended level range: 68-70
Difficulty level: Extremely easy.
By far the easiest lvl 68-70 item to attain (at least for me), you start out with this quest: www.wowhead.com/?quest=10681 . As you might have noticed, this quest line is *conveniently* the prerequisite to being able to talk to Oronok Torn-Heart. So, you get two birds with one stone on this one. Simply follow the quests and get the spirits from the various elementals, and you end up with an awesome tanking waist piece.
Legs: www.thottbot.com/?i=59244
Recommended level range: 68
Difficulty level: Extremely easy.
This item is quested as well, and starts here: www.wowhead.com/?quest=10760 . The entire quest line involves very little combat, and it is all entirely soloable. Flight form is extremely useful, and I think its worth waiting until 68 to start. You CAN start this at around 67 or so afaik, but flightform is very useful. Not too much to say about this one, because it is so straightforward. Grats on your new leg piece!
Feet: www.thottbot.com/?i=57928
Recommended level range: 68-70
Difficulty level: Easy.
These quested boots are actually from the Blade's Edge Mountains for once, and start with this quest: www.wowhead.com/?quest=10567 . It is only a two part quest, making this a very easy item to snatch at lvl 68. I don't recommend trying to do this without flightform, as the mobs can actually do a great deal of damage and there are a lot of them around. After completing the followup, you get your boots!! I recommend the +12 stam enchant for these bad boys
Rings: www.thottbot.com/?i=59740 and www.thottbot.com/?i=58576 .
Recommended level range: 60-61 for the ring listed below, 70 for the two listed.
Difficulty level: These instances can be tough, but with a guildy run they are easy to farm for.
The easiest tanking rings to attain are going to actually come from HellFire Ramparts, and would be twin www.thottbot.com/?i=55563 . These you can get at 60 or so, but the ones I listed are more suited for lvl 70 bears. You COULD just get two Iron Bands of the Unbreakable, but on your way to Karazhan you'll end up with the Violet Signet, so I wouldn't get too beat up trying to get multiple rings from Escape from Durnholde.
Trinkets:
If you're horde you should definately have Mark of Tyranny, if you missed out on it, I'm sorry, there are still NO other alternatives for armor on a trinket slot. Both factions should get enchanting to 265 and make yourself a Smoking Heart of the Mountain. You can drop enchanting afterward and still use the trinket. YES its worth getting enchanting up to 265 JUST for this trinket. Look up an enchanting skill-up guide and its not even too hard to do.
Weapon: www.thottbot.com/?i=54841
Recommended level range: 70 (but start working on your rep around 61-62)
This weapon requires you to be exalted with Cenarion Expedition, so its not *easy* to attain, it just takes a lot of steamvault runs. To make things a bit easier on yourself, buy some Unidentified plant parts before you head into zangramarsh and turn them in for rep. You only get rep from turning them in pre-honored. Then do all the quests in zangra, and run bogs and slavepens a bunch. Steamvaults to finish. Lots of steamvaults.
Also, on your way leveling up pick up a www.thottbot.com/?i=12314 . Its equipable at 43, and you'll use it all the way to 70 if you don't find a Braxxis staff of slumber. While I do find myself using Staff of beasts more often while tanking just to add dps, in terms of BEST MITIGATION, you want to have a good armor staff in your bags for some of those boss fights.
Cloak: www.thottbot.com/?i=56894
Recommended Level Range: 63-70
Difficulty Level: Depends on your party and average group level. Easy at 64+.
First off thanks for reminding me of this item, I've had it on since 62 and I completely forgot about it. It drops off of Rokmar the Crackler in the slave pens, despite its name "Bokstrock" that makes you think it would be in the underbogs. You simply will not find a better tanking cloak aside from this one until after 70 and you start raiding (or 10 manning I think). I'm still using it now, I put 120 armor on it because its cheap, even though it doesn't get the bearform modifier. I'm considering getting 12 agi soon as a replacement.
Cloak Rank 2: www.thottbot.com/?i=59649
Recommended Level Range: 70
Difficulty level: Moderate
I just picked this cloak up off of the first boss in Mechanar, Mechano-Lord Capacitus. This instance is a bit tough, but since this cloak drops off the first boss, its not too difficult to get. I was fortunate enough to get it on my first run, despite its 16% drop chance or so. This is definately an upgrade to Bogstrok cloak, but don't skip t
